In addition to the Muhammad Ali Center, Muhammad Ali is leaving a lasting legacy through these organizations:
Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute
As a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence, the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center (MAPC) at Barrow Neurological Institute provides diagnostic and treatment services, research, and education for those whose lives have been touched by Parkinson’s disease. In addition to clinical services, the Center conducts extensive research in new medical and surgical treatments for Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. Over 20 support groups throughout Arizona bring together people with Parkinson’s disease, their families and caregivers to share information and offer mutual support. Educational conferences for patients, families and health care professionals are held throughout the year.
In 2009, the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center will be moving into a new 9,100 square foot space in the Muhammad and Lonnie Ali Pavilion at the Barrow Neurological Institute. This new space will allow MAPC to expand their services to patients providing them with the quality care they need. The Center will include 10 exam rooms, a tremor exam room, a Botox treatment room, a tilt room to help evaluate patients with orthostatic hypertension, and a balance lab. The new facility will also feature treatment areas for physical, occupational, and speech therapy; space for education and recreation classes; a resource library with books, videos, and computers; and a store which will sell educational materials and equipment.
Activities of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center are funded by donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations. The growth and success of the Center over the past year is due in part to the Celebrity Fight Night Foundation. Recognized as one of the nation's elite charity events, Celebrity Fight Night is a star-studded evening presented in honor of featured guest, Muhammad Ali. Celebrities and professional athletes from all over the country participate in a night filled with incredible Live Auction items and live musical performances by many of today's brightest stars. Throughout Celebrity Fight Night's fourteen year history over $52 million has been raised with the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute as the primary beneficiary. Numerous other charities have benefited and countless lives have been changed thanks to the tremendous generosity of our supporters.
