Muhammad Ali Center Announces Days of Greatness Events (September 17-18) Leading Up to 2015 Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards

Series of Community Events at Ali Center Includes Free Film Screenings, Free Exhibit Opening with Artist, and Local TV Journalist Dawne Gee as Daughters of Greatness Speaker

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (September 10, 2015) — As is customary, the Muhammad Ali Center will host a series of community-based events on the two days preceding the Third Annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards presented by YUM! Brands Foundation, taking place on September 19 at the Louisville Marriott Downtown. The Ali Center’s “Days of Greatness” will take place on September 17 and 18. Three of the events are free and open to the public and one is a continuation of the Center’s Daughters of Greatness series, with this month’s guest being local news personality, Dawne Gee.

Following are brief descriptions of the events:

  • September 17, 5:30pm (and 8:00pm): Free film screening(s) of the new film, Cassius Ali, which will be exhibited within the Muhammad Ali Childhood Home Museum at 3302 Grand Avenue. The film will trace Muhammad’s journey and the importance of his childhood years in this home. Be the first to view the film (approximately 15 minutes long).   • September 17 at 6:00 pm: Free film screening of Pushing The Elephant, which tells the extraordinary story of a mother (Rose Mapendo) and daughter reunited after a decade separated by civil war in the Republic of Congo (DRC). Rose Mapendo, who is this year’s Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awardee for Gender Equality, will be in attendance to introduce the film and answer questions. Click here for details.
  • September 18, Hot breakfast at 8:30am and program from 9:00-10:00am:  “Daughters of Greatness” Breakfast Series: Dawne Gee. This hot breakfast event features prominent women from the community who are engaged in social philanthropy, activism, and pursuits of justice.   • September 18, 5:30 to 7:30pm:  Meet the Artist: Michelle Wong. To inaugurate its new Through the Lens series, the Ali Center welcomes photojournalist, Michelle Wong. Visitors will be served appetizers and refreshments and have the chance to meet Mr. Wong before walking through a special selection of his photographs on display at no charge. Ticket sales for the 2015 Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards end on Sunday, September 13th. The third annual event will be held at the Louisville Marriott Downtown on Saturday evening, September 19th. This fundraising gala honors individuals’ significant contributions around the world toward the attainment of peace, social justice, or other positive actions pertaining to human or social capital. Awardees include Harry Belafonte, Geena Davis, Rose Mapendo, and Dr. Andy Moore from Lexington, Kentucky—in addition to six young awardees from around the world who are 30 years and under. Four-time Olympic Gold Medal Winner, Janet Evans, will host the event.
