Council of Students

The Muhammad Ali Center Council of Students (MACCS) is a diverse group of young leaders, committed to improving themselves and their communities through the practice of Muhammad Ali’s six core principles: Respect, Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Spirituality, and Giving. As a youth-led organization, these dynamic students make decisions that guide the course of their service work and leadership development.

Program benefits

  • Find their voice for social change, and understand the value and power of giving

Qualifications

High school students in grades 9-12 who demonstrate the following:

  • Involvement in community service or extra-curricular activities in school or community
  • Potential to develop leadership skills
  • Excellent attendance, good academic grades, and exemplary conduct are expected

Program requirements

  • Students must be available to meet two evenings per month at the Center
  • Students must be able to participate in learning projects throughout the year

Applications for the 2014-2015 school year are now being accepted.  All Louisville-area high school students are eligible to apply by completing this form. Deadline to submit applications is June 30, 2014.

Creating our Future

Designed for middle-and high school age youth, the "Creating Our Future" curriculum consists of six modules, each focusing on a single core principle embodied in the life and work of Muhammad Ali — Respect, Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Spirituality, and Giving. The aim is to guide young people in an exploration of these six core principles, encourage the incorporation of these values into their lives, and inspire the development of a “life plan” that reflects a positive sense of self, a commitment to community, and preparation for the future.

The individual activities of each module focus on experiential and emotional learning, getting the participants to reflect upon, and express, their sense of self, sense of others, and sense of purpose. Modularized content allows the development of lesson plans that are flexible and customized to each group, time constraints, and social and cultural sensitivities. The curriculum can be delivered in a “train-the-trainer” format, or directly to participants by The Center staff.
