An Evening of Inspiration for Foster Children and their Families
On the evening of Thursday, August 1, 2019, the Muhammad Ali Center will be partnering with Roo’s Wish to host a motivational event for 200 middle-school aged children living in foster care, along with their foster parents. Research shows that only about 50 percent of youth raised in foster care end up finishing high school. Indeed, high school dropout rates are 3 times higher for foster youth than other low-income children. Only 3 percent of foster children graduate from a 4-year college. We can do better!
Consequently, at the end of this summer, just before students head back to school, Roo’s Wish and the MAC will collaborate on “Choose to be a Champion,” a motivational evening dedicated to empowering our community’s most vulnerable children towards educational greatness! This high-impact program will consist of speakers, music, and discussions that focus on the importance of education, healthy relationships, making good decisions, and building confidence.
Local resource providers and organizations will also be on site to deliver information and support to the families in attendance. Additionally, Roo’s Wish and the MAC will provide dinner for all participants. Finally, often foster children lack the proper tools that are essential to success in school. Teachers have shared that frequently foster children are sent to school with little more than a pencil. Thus, it is our goal to donate basic school supplies package to all 200 children at our event!
This event is FREE and open to all middle school aged foster children, foster families, and siblings. Please register: https://19291.blackbaudhosting.com/19291/Roos-Wish-Choose-to-be-a-Champion
