I Am America: The Long Road to Justice Program:
At the age of 26, in conscientious objection to the Vietnam war, Muhammad Ali stated, “Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?” A half-century later, another 26 year old Louisvillian, Breonna Taylor, was denied her human rights as she was shot and killed by police in her home. During this virtual program, our esteemed panel will explore the “long road to justice” examining our profoundly troubled history of policing and race. We will discuss how police brutality, racial discrimination, and the dehumanization of black and brown bodies are rooted in US history, and how deeply seated systemic racism continues to inform the criminalization and policing of communities of color. We will conclude with a call to action, honoring Breonna’s life and legacy by ensuring that this injustice never happens again.
