Evening includes discussion with the film’s translator

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (May 17, 2016) — In partnership with the World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, the Muhammad Ali Center is showing Frame By Frame on May 24^th at 6:00 p.m. in the Center’s auditorium. This is a ticketed event. A discussion with the film’s translator will follow.

Frame By Frame (synopsis): When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, taking a photo was a crime. After the regime fell from power in 2001, a fledgling free press emerged and a photography revolution was born. Now, as foreign troops and media withdraw, Afghanistan is left to stand on its own, and so are its journalists. Set in a modern Afghanistan bursting with color and character, Frame By Frame follows four Afghan photojournalists as they navigate an emerging and dangerous media landscape—reframing Afghanistan for the world, and for themselves. Through cinema vérité, intimate interviews, powerful photojournalism, and never-before-seen archival footage shot in secret during the Taliban regime, the film connects audiences with four humans in the pursuit of the truth. Following the screening, the film’s translator and associate producer, Baktash Ahadi will lead a discussion. Baktash Ahadi was born in Kabul in 1981. His family had to flee during the Soviet Invasion in 1984. After spending over a year and half in Pakistan between refugee camps and makeshift homes, his family was given asylum in the United States and started their new life in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Baktash started his career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mozambique. He then went into management, consulting with Booz Allen Hamilton before serving as a military translator in Afghanistan for three years. His experience not only brought him closer to his roots but also instilled a sense of responsibility to educate others on the realities on the ground in Afghanistan. Baktash joined Frame By Frame as ambassador for that same reason—to shed light on the country’s complexities through human stories.
