Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards Spur Historic Athlete Reunion
The second annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards presented by YUM! Brands Foundation will take place Saturday, September 27 at the Louisville Downtown Marriott. Hours before the event, for the first time in 47 years, five individuals who attended the legendary Cleveland Summit will be reunited. This group includes Jim Brown, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, John Wooten, Bill Russell, and Muhammad Ali. All five gentlemen will be present at the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards in Louisville.
On June 4, 1967, a group of esteemed athletes met for what is now referred to as the Cleveland Summit. The meeting was called so that this group of athletes could evaluate how serious Muhammad Ali was about his choice as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War. Ali’s response to this group would determine whether or not they would stand behind him and his controversial decision. Jim Brown, who spearheaded the initial meeting, is being honored with the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Lifetime Achievement Award at the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards.
