Muhammad Ali Kentucky Humanitarian Awardee Announced

Dr. Andrew Moore, II, of Lexington, Kentucky to Receive Kentucky Humanitarian Award at Third Annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards This September

Moore is Honored for Founding ‘Surgery On Sunday’

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (July 3, 2015) — Dr. Andrew Moore, II, a Lexington-based plastic surgeon, will be presented the 2015 Kentucky Humanitarian Award at the Third Annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards taking place on Saturday, September 19th at the Marriott Louisville Downtown. Specifically, Dr. Moore was chosen for this award for founding Surgery on Sunday, a program that he and an army of almost 450 volunteers commit themselves to on the third Sunday of each month at the Lexington Surgery Center, for individuals across the Commonwealth of Kentucky who cannot afford much needed medical services. Dr. Moore and his team of physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses, and administrative personnel have donated nearly 90,000 hours of service since the organization was founded in 2005, the same year the Ali Center opened.

The Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards, presented by the YUM! Brands Foundation, is a charitable event of celebration and recognition which honors individuals around the world who have made significant contributions toward the attainment of peace, social justice, or other positive actions pertaining to human or social capital. In addition to the awards for “seasoned” humanitarians, six young people, 30 years and younger, are also honored with distinctions that correlate with Muhammad’s Six Core Principles: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect, and Spirituality.

“It is pretty flattering and humbling to be measured up to some of the other humanitarians who have been honored in the past,” said Dr. Moore. “Especially because this award is named after one of my heroes, Muhammad Ali, it makes the award even more meaningful,” he continued.  “Giving back’ is so much more rewarding than almost anything else one can do. To help our underserved Kentuckians with their medical issues and be able to treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve, and—above all—be able to heal them just feels really good. If I hadn’t founded Surgery on Sunday, and something like it existed, I know I would be volunteering for it.”

Dr. Moore also wanted to thank and give credit to all of the volunteers who keep the program going and make it successful. “I couldn’t do it without them,” he said.

Past Kentucky Humanitarian Award Recipients are:  Mark Hogg, Founder and CEO of Louisville-based WaterStep, 2013 recipient; and Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Deborah Blair, founders of the West End School in Louisville, 2014 recipients. Other awardees will be announced in the near future.
