Exhibit will be the largest temporary exhibit in the Center’s history and the first on display in the new exhibition space
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (July 20, 2016) — RACE: Are We So Different? opens to the public at the Muhammad Ali Center on September 24th. The highly-praised exhibit, which runs through January 2, 2017, helps visitors understand what race is and what it is not. This eye-opening interactive exhibit is the first nationally-traveling exhibition that provides a look at race from biological, cultural, and historical points of view and provides tools to recognize racial ideas and practices in contemporary American life.
RACE is produced by the American Anthropological Association with assistance from the Science Museum of Minnesota. The exhibit will be on display at the Ali Center with support from Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc.
Through interactive exhibit components, historical artifacts, iconic objects, photographs, multimedia and graphic displays, visitors can explore every day experiences of living with race—and be challenged to think about race and human variation and about the differences and similarities among people. Since its creation, RACE has literally traveled across the country.
“The Ali Center is fortunate to have such a compelling exhibit come to the Ali Center,” said Jeanie Kahnke, Sr. Director of Public Relations and External Affairs at the Muhammad Ali Center. “The topic of race has become increasingly significant and timely in recent months and we hope that by having the RACE exhibit in our Center, it will spur interest in learning more about the perceptions and realities of race. We also hope that it will encourage impactful community conversation around the subject.”
The Ali Center will also produce programming in tandem with the exhibit, including professional developments and “Talking Circles”—facilitated community discussions for employees and co-workers to discuss race and racism in a non-confrontational way. Talking Circles are available based on reservations.
RACE will be the first exhibit to open in the Ali Center’s newly-renovated temporary exhibit space. Entry to RACE is an additional $3 on admission pricing. Adults are $12, Seniors (65+) are $11, Military and Students (with proof of I.D.) are $8, Children (6-12) are $7, and Children under 5 are free.
The Ali Center will also host a Free Educator Preview night on September 26th from 3:00-7:00 p.m. This open invitation for all educators will include access to the exhibit and educator resources. Reservations are required and can be submitted here or by calling 502.992.5340. In partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools, the Ali Center will hold a Professional Development with educators about RACE and racism. Please visit this page for more information.
