Time Inc.’s Sports Illustrated announced that it would dedicate the franchise’s Sportsman Legacy Award in the name of boxing legend, civil rights leader, humanitarian and icon, Muhammad Ali. It is now known as the Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award. The Legacy Award was created in 2008 to honor former athletes and sports figures that embody the ideals of sportsmanship, leadership, and philanthropy as vehicles for changing the world. There is no better example of this tradition of excellence and influence than Muhammad Ali. Ali was recognized at a dedication ceremony at the Muhammad Ali Center on the anniversary of the legendary “Thrilla in Manilla” bout in which Ali defeated Joe Frazier.
