The Greatest Remembered
Remembering Muhammad Ali 10 Years After His Passing
The news of Muhammad Ali’s passing came on a late summer Friday night in June, sending ripples across continents. The Greatest Boxer of All Time passed away at 74 in Arizona on June 3, 2016, surrounded by his family.
Once known as the “Louisville Lip,” Ali’s life was defined not only by his boxing prowess and public bravado but by his unwavering dedication to promoting peace and the belief that everyone deserves to live in freedom, safety, and prosperity.
In his later years, as he lived with Parkinson’s disease, his presence took on a different kind of power. No longer defined by speed or voice, he became a symbol of resilience, grace, and quiet strength, continuing to inspire even as his body slowed.

Ali’s final wishes were carried out with care. A Janazah prayer service at the Louisville Exposition Center, the site of his first professional fight, drew more than 14,000 people. A private burial followed, preceded by a procession through the West End to Cave Hill Cemetery. Tens of thousands lined the streets, offering flowers, reaching toward the hearse, and finding their own way to say goodbye to the People’s Champ.
The week culminated in a public memorial at the KFC Yum! Center, open to all, just as Ali intended. The arena filled, with thousands more gathered outside and millions watching around the world. Family, friends, and public figures spoke to his life and legacy, honoring not just the fighter, but the man.
Ali was laid to rest at Cave Hill Cemetery, on a quiet hill overlooking a pond. Facing east toward Mecca, he was buried in a simple white shroud, a final reflection of the humility that defined him.

Carrying Ali's Legacy Forward
Ten years after Muhammad's passing, how do we go about forwarding his legacy?
In the ten years since his passing, the question has lingered: what now?
For a man whose legacy feels both unchallenged and incomparable, how does it continue? There was no one before Ali quite like him, and there may never be another who can influence change as he did, who championed peace and justice while bridging the worlds of sport, culture, and media.
And yet, perhaps that is not the point. The hope is not to replicate Ali, but to carry his spirit forward, to inspire future generations to pursue greatness in their own way, and to live with compassion, courage, and understanding.
"His life is a reminder that, no matter our struggles, if we stand firm in our beliefs and lead with compassion, we can leave a lasting and meaning impact on the world."
As the Ali Center reflects on this, its vision remains clear: to be a living reflection of Muhammad’s values and to help create a just and compassionate world where all people can reach their full potential.
The Center continues to honor that legacy by carrying forward his lessons and principles, working to build a better world for future generations.
It helps young people become leaders.
It builds more compassionate communities.
It creates opportunities for people to come together across differences.
It encourages individuals to find their own greatness.
And it carries forward a legacy that continues to challenge and inspire.
His legacy is not just what he accomplished, but what he stood for. It is a reminder that greatness is measured not only in achievement, but in conviction, compassion, and the courage to stand for something larger than oneself.
And in that, it offers a lesson. That each of us, in our own way, has the ability to create change, to bridge divides, and to live with purpose
