Day of Compassion

Launched in 2026 on the ten-year anniversary of Muhammad Ali’s passing, the Muhammad Ali Center’s “Day of Compassion” is a global day of service and community action that honors Ali’s legacy of giving back. 

 Ali believed that greatness was found in not just what people achieve, but in how people treat each other. With Ali’s humanitarian legacy in mind, the Day of Compassion coordinates service projects from multiple non-profit organizations, bringing in hundreds of volunteers in a community-wide day of service. 

The inaugural Day of Compassion was held on June 3, 2026, anchored in Ali’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Through a partnership with Metro United Way, hundreds of acts of service were recorded within local non-profit organizations such as Feed Louisville, Gilda’s Club, Parks Alliance of Louisville, Family Scholar House, and many more. From cleaning neighborhood parks and beautifying community spaces to assembling meal kits and supporting local organizations, volunteers contributed hundreds of hours of service that uplifted the city of Louisville. 

The program was supported by multiple organizations who volunteered their time and effort, including our partners at The PwC Foundation, Amazon, Humana, Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville FC, Louisville Parks and Recreation, Down Syndrome of Louisville, and more. 

The Muhammad Ali Index is the world’s foremost study on compassion, created by the Muhammad Ali Center to forward Muhammad Ali’s compassionate legacy. The study launched in 2025 to not only measure, but predict, the state of compassion. 

This initiative started with a 12-city pilot program in the United States and has since expanded internationally. 

Research begins with cultural trends and insights found within each city, creating data-backed recommendations that will allow amplification of compassion directly tied to research. 

This research leads to forecasting and planning that city leaders and officials can provide to community partners, allowing them to help shape the future of their cities to build more compassionate networks.

On our inaugural Day of Compassion, we reached many areas: neighborhoods, kitchens, parks, health centers, and more. Now we are calling you. Anyone from anywhere, near and far, seeking acts small and large.
